Why frequency order works

Every language has a small core doing most of the work. The 1,000 most common words cover roughly 80% of ordinary conversation; the first 3,000 take you most of the way to reading a newspaper. A textbook spends chapter one on colours and classroom objects. Frequency order spends it on the words you will hear in the first ten minutes of real speech.
