You study a word. You feel like you know it. Three days later it's gone. This isn't a failure of willpower or talent — it's just how human memory is built. The good news: the same research that explains why you forget also tells you exactly when to review so you don't.

The forgetting curve

Over a century ago, the psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus measured how fast he forgot newly learned material. The result, now called the forgetting curve, is steep: without review, memory of new information drops sharply within hours and days.

But he found something more useful too. Each time you successfully recall something just as you're about to forget it, the curve resets — and it falls more slowly the next time. Review four or five times at the right moments and a fact can stay put for months or years.

Forgetting isn't the enemy of learning. A little forgetting, caught at the right moment, is what turns a fact into a memory.

What "spaced repetition" actually means

Spaced repetition is simply this: review material at increasing intervals, timed to the edge of forgetting. A new word might come back in a day, then 3 days, then a week, then a month, then several months — each successful recall buying a longer gap before the next.

The payoff is efficiency. Instead of re-reading your whole deck every day, you only ever review the specific words that are about to fade. Stronger words rest; weak ones resurface. You study less and remember more.

How the scheduling works

Under the hood, most systems use a variant of an algorithm called SM-2. You don't need the equations, but the logic is worth knowing because it changes how you should answer:

  • After each card you rate how it went — typically again, hard, good, or easy.
  • Rate a card easy and its next interval stretches a long way out.
  • Rate it again and it drops back to the start to be relearned.
  • Each card carries its own "ease" factor, so your schedule is personalised word by word.

Answer honestly. The single biggest mistake people make is rating cards easy to feel good. The algorithm believes you — and schedules the word so far out that you genuinely forget it. Grade the recall you actually had, not the one you wish you had.

Getting the most out of it

1. Recall before you flip

The power is in the effort of retrieval. Always try to produce the answer before revealing it, even when you're unsure. A struggled-for recall is worth far more than a glanced-at one.

2. Keep daily reviews small and constant

Spaced repetition punishes binge-and-vanish studying. Skip a week and the due cards pile into a wall. Ten minutes every day keeps the queue gentle and the curve in your favour.

3. Pair it with frequency

Spaced repetition decides when to study; the frequency method decides what. Together they're the whole game: the most useful words, reviewed at the most useful moments.
